My post at Apple Forum Got Removed! It is true then.

4 07 2008

I just received this email from Apple from posting on their forum. It just shows how much they have change and how much restriction and censorship there is on the web. This is very sad.

A copy of your message for reference:

I was still hoping to pay 199 for the iphone at the Apple Store as I don’t qualify with ATT till feb next year. I guess all hope is gone!!

Why? Cos’ if you visit www.apple.com/iphone, scroll to the bottom and find the * iphone disclosure it would read “….sold separately to qualified customers”, this was just change recently as I have a screen capture on my blog http://tinyfish.net/2008/07/01/3g-iphone-upgrade-hope/, that reads “sold separately” WITHOUT any reference to qualified customers! Sigh… There is no more hope for ineligible customers at all!

Furthermore, I did a review of the WWDC video again and Steve did use the phrase “not anything more than 199 in ALMOST all countries” the keyword here is ALMOST, that mean they aka service providers do have the liberty to change the price as they wish! This is very very sneaky and I do not like it at all coming from Apple and Steve Jobs, whom I have always held the highest respect and loyalty to the company and person since the days when Apple was struggling to survive with a $500 million debt, it is shame that what it has now become since the fame of the iPod generation. I do miss the good old days of the Apple. I do feel strongly they are soon to be the Microsoft and Bill Gates of the computer generation which I despise and hate, and I sincerely do hope that I do not feel that way with Apple and Steve Jobs in the near future for being so sneaky, though I am leaning precariously that way.

The point is this, if it was mention 399 to begin with and not use some fancy marketing strategy to invoke emotions, confuse and disguise what the true intention was, I guess everybody would be fine with it, I would have even paid that amount or more for whatever it was stated, I am sure. But I guess it was not case and I suspect that Apple is really getting a good payday out of ATT and other providers worldwide, so much so to deploy this kind of marketing strategy. It is a shame as I am sure that many mac fans who are not eligible to upgrade would have been more than happy to part with 399 or even more if Apple was truthful about it to begin with, instead of putting a check mark on “more affordable”.

A very sad day.

From a devote Mac fan.

yes, they remove anything is negative to them. they cannot take any challenge because they do have many problems with their products. They just cover the truth. I agree with you about the cheap marking gimmick with ATT on iphone. I think they make their first nasty step and the whole company will fall soon. It’s company culture.

Have you seen successful company like Sony does all these nasty thing like apple? No!

Not even Microsoft does anything like that “cheap”

Let’s watch, apple will defeat itself. Greed kills.

I believe Apple is going too far in how they are trying to control the sale of the iPhone. To keep a long story short, I switched from my existing provider in Singapore to Singtel in January 2009, lost the iphone(16 GB) two weeks later and Singtel offers me a replacement for US$1000 bucks and I tell them they are insane and practicing predatory pricing. Shame on Apple to allow this.

You can buy an unlocked iPhone in Hong Kong for US$800 from an Apple shop. Optus in Australia sells it with a pre-paid line for US$600 + US$80 prepaid card top up.

Today I was reading about Apples International Warranty on the iPhone and guess what I see

. Can I get my iPhone serviced outside the country of purchase?
No, service for eligible repairs is only available in the country where your iPhone was purchased.

I cannot remember the last time I bought a laptop or phone that did not have a truly international warranty where it can be repaired anywhere. Apple really SHAME on you for setting the telecommunications industry back so many years. What has a product warranty got to do with the carrier.

I have a operational line with Singtel, I bought the iPhone in another country but it is unlocked by the carrier also according to policy, now I suspect if anything goes wrong Apple and Singtel will try to screw me over again. By the way am not an Apple Basher, I have gone through two iMacs, this is written on a Macbook Pro and I “used to be” to be telling everyone I know that they should buy an iPhone. After what I have discovered over the last 4 weeks, I tell my friend to run for their lifes and not to touch an iPhone with a ten foot pole unless Apple changes it policies. I guess the two iPods I was planning to buy for my kids will have to wait, just on a matter of principle.

I have been loyal to the Apple Brand for over 20 years and it looks like Apple is starting to repeat its mistakes of the past and getting way to arrogant in how it treats its customers. By the way e-mails to Apple received no acknowledgement, so I guess my a customers opinion doesn’t matter anymore.
